Handsome antique steamer trunk with great old-world character. Black canvas-covered body with embossed metal banding, stamped decorative clavos and corner caps, wooden slats, two heavy latches, a brass center lock and leather top straps. C. 1890-1910. The flat top makes it a bench or end-of-bed storage piece.
The patina is wonderful: the metal has aged to a rich coppery tone, with natural wear, scuffs and small paint marks consistent with age. Original hardware is intact, including the latches, brass escutcheon and side handle. Solid and sturdy, with strong visual presence.
